PATTERN
See diagrams A.1 to A.6 and A.x. Choose diagram for your size (applies to A.2 and A.x).
Diagram A.x shows the position of the thumb on the right mitten.
KNITTING TIP
To avoid the mitten becoming tight when working pattern, it is important that the strands at the back are not tight. Use a size larger needle when working pattern if necessary.
MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE
The piece is worked from the cuff upwards and stitches are increased for the thumb-gusset. These increased stitches are placed on a thread and the mitten finished separately. The thumb is worked to finish.
LEFT MITTEN
Cast on 44-52 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 mm and DROPS Merino Extra Fine, colour light taupe. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) and colour pattern as shown in diagram A.1. When A.1 is finished, the rib measures approx. 6 cm. Continue the rib with colour light taupe until piece measures 12 cm. Knit 1 round and decrease 4 stitches evenly spaced = 40-48 stitches.
Read KNITTING TIP and work diagram A.2. When you have worked as far as the grey squares in the diagram, work A.3 over these 2 stitches. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION! Continue working according to diagrams A.2 and A.3 (increasing stitches in A.3). When A.3 is finished there are 10 stitches in A.3 – place these stitches on a thread. On the next round cast on 2 stitches behind the thumb-stitches = 40-48 stitches. Continue A.2 in the round over all stitches. When the diagram is finished, there are 16 stitches left. Work 1 round with light taupe where all stitches are knitted together 2 and 2 = 8 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
THUMB
Place the 10 stitches from the thread on double pointed needle size 3 mm – in addition knit up 10 stitches behind the thumb (knit up 3 stitches in each side and 4 stitches in the 2 cast-on stitches) = 20 stitches. Work according to diagram A.4 until the thumb measures 4-5 cm – finish after a complete repeat in height. Then continue with colour light taupe. Knit 3 rounds and decrease 4 stitches evenly on each round = 8 stitches. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 4 stitches.
Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
RIGHT MITTEN
Work in the same way as the left mitten but use diagram A.x which shows where the thumb is positioned. Increase for the thumb-gusset as shown in diagram A.5.
THUMB
Work in the same way as the left mitten but work pattern in the round according to diagram A.6.
