INCREASE TIP
Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over which is worked twisted on the next row to avoid a hole. Work the new stitches in stocking stitch.
DECREASE TIP
Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker sits between these 2 stitches), slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased). Repeat at the other marker.
MITTENS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE
The mittens are worked in the round with double pointed needles from the cuff up. First the cuff is worked in rib then the rest of the mitten in stocking stitch. The whole piece is worked with 1 strand of each quality.
RIGHT MITTEN
Cast on 48-52-56 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 mm, 1 strand DROPS Alpaca and 1 strand DROPS Kid-Silk (2 strands). Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) for 12-12-14 cm.
Knit 1 round and decrease 12-14-16 stitches evenly spaced = 36-38-40 stitches.
Continue with stocking stitch. REMEMBER THE KNITTING TENSION!
When the piece measures 3 cm after the rib, increase for the thumb on each side of the first stitch on the round – read INCREASE TIP. Increase like this every 2nd round (outside the previously increased stitches) a total of 5-6-7 times = 46-50-54 stitches. Work the new stitches in stocking stitch.
When the increases are finished place the 11-13-15 thumb-stitches on a thread. Continue in the round with stocking stitch and cast on 1 stitch behind the thumb on the first round = 36-38-40 stitches.
Work until the piece measures 14-15-16 cm after the rib (approx. 26-27-30 cm from the cast-on edge). There is 4 cm left, try the mitten on and work to desired length before decreasing as follows:
Insert 1 marker at the beginning of the round and 1 marker after 18-19-20 stitches. Decrease 1 stitch on each side of both markers – read DECREASE TIP (4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every 2nd round 2 more times, then every round 4-4-5 times = 8-10-8 stitches. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 4-5-4 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The mitten measures approx. 30-31-34 cm from the cast-on edge. Fold up the bottom 6-6-7 cm.
THUMB
Place the 11-13-15 thumb-stitches on double pointed needles size 3 mm. Knit up 3 stitches behind the thumb = 14-16-18 stitches. Work stocking stitch in the round until the thumb measures 5½-6-6½ cm. There is ½ cm left, try the mitten on and work to desired length before decreasing as follows:
Knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 7-8-9 stitches. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 until there is 1-0-1 stitch left, knit 1-0-1 = 4-4-5 stitches. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
LEFT MITTEN
Cast on and work in the same way as the right mitten but increasing for the thumb on each side of the last stitch on the round (instead of the first).
