INCREASE TIP (for thumb-gusset):
Work to the marker-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit 1 (= marker-stitch), make 1 yarn over (2 increased stitches). On the next round work the yarn overs twisted as described below (to avoid holes).
When working the next increase, work until there is 1 stitch left before the marker-stitch, make 1 yarn over, knit 3 (marker-stitch is the middle of these 3 stitches), make 1 yarn over (2 increased stitches). Subsequent increases always on the outside of the previous increases.
BEFORE THUMB-STITCH
Knit the yarn over through the back loop, then work the new stitch in stocking stitch.
AFTER THUMB-STITCH
Slip the yarn over off the needle and replace it the other way round (insert the left needle through the back when replacing it). Knit through the front loop, then work the new stitch in stocking stitch.
DECREASE TIP
Decrease 1 stitch on each side of the marker thread as follows: Work until there are 3 stitches left before the marker thread, knit 2 together, knit 2 (marker thread sits between these 2 stitches) slip 1 stitch knit-wise, knit 1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (2 stitches decreased).
MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE
The piece is worked in the round, from the cuff up.
LEFT MITTEN
Cast on 40-44-48 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 mm, 1 strand DROPS Puna and 1 strand DROPS Kid-Silk (2 strands) or 1 strand DROPS Merino Extra Fine and 1 strand DROPS Kid-Silk (2 strands). Make sure you do not cast on too tightly.
Work rib as follows: Purl 0-1-2, work rib (knit 2, purl 2) until there are 0-3-2 stitches left on the round, knit 0-2-2 and purl 0-1-0.
Continue this rib for 7-7-8 cm.
Work the next round as follows:
Knit above knit and purl above purl across the first 10-11-12 stitches, purl 2 together, knit above knit and purl above purl across the remaining stitches = 39-43-47 stitches. Insert 1 marker. The piece is now measured from here.
Change to double pointed needles size 3.5 mm. Work stocking stitch and PATTERN in the round as follows:
Knit 3-4-5, work A.1, knit 3-4-5 (= 21-23-25 stitches on top of mitten), knit to end of round (= 18-20-22 stitches underneath the mitten). Insert 1 marker in the next-to-last stitch on the round (= thumb-stitch).
Continue with stocking stitch and pattern. AT THE SAME TIME increase 1 stitch on each side of the thumb-stitch for the thumb-gusset – read INCREASE TIP (2 increased stitches). Increase on each side of the increased stitches every 3rd round a total of 5-6-7 times = 49-55-61 stitches. Remember to maintain the knitting tension.
When the mitten measures 6½-7-7½ cm from the marker, place the 11-13-15 thumb-stitches on a thread/stitch holder for the thumb and cast on 1 stitch above the stitches on the thread/holder = 39-43-47 stitches (= 21-23-25 stitches on top of the mitten and 18-20-22 stitches underneath).
Continue with stocking stitch and pattern until the mitten measures 15-16-17 cm from the marker. There is 3 cm left to finished length.
Now decrease for the top of the mitten.
Insert 1 marker-thread at the beginning of the round and 1 marker-thread after 21-23-25 stitches. A.1 is finished but continue with knit above knit and purl above purl. AT THE SAME TIME decrease on each side of both marker-threads – read DECREASE TIP (4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every 2nd round 3-3-3 times, then every round 2-3-4 times = 19-19-19 stitches. On the next round, knit 1-1-1, then knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 10-10-10 stitches.
Cut the strand, thread it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
THUMB
Place the 11-13-15 thumb-stitches from the thread/stitch holder on double pointed needles size 3.5 mm. Knit up 3 stitches behind the thumb (1 in the stitch before the marker-stitch, the marker-stitch and 1 in the stitch after the marker-stitch) = 14-16-18 stitches. Work stocking stitch in the round for 5½-6-6½ cm. On the next round knit all stitches together 2 and 2 = 7-8-9 stitches.
Cut the strand, thread it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
RIGHT MITTEN
Work in the same way as the left mitten but insert the thumb-marker in the 23rd-25th-27th stitch (i.e., the 2nd stitch underneath the mitten).
Finish in the same way as the left mitten.
