KNITTING TENSION
23 stitches in width and 32 rows in height with stocking stitch and Nordic pattern on needle size 3 mm = 10 x 10 cm.
NOTE: Needle size is only a guide. If you get too many stitches within 10 cm, change to a larger needle size. If you get too few stitches within 10 cm, change to a smaller needle size.

INCREASE TIP
Increase 1 stitch by making 1 yarn over as shown in diagram A.1, i.e., on each side of 5 stitches on each side of the mitten. On the next round, work the yarn overs as follows:
AFTER 5 SIDE-STITCHES:
Knit through the back loop to avoid a hole. Work the new stitches into the pattern as shown in the diagram.
BEFORE 5 SIDE-STITCHES:
Slip the yarn over off the left needle and replace it the other way round (insert left needle through the back when replacing it). Knit through the front loop to avoid a hole. Work the new stitches into the pattern as shown in the diagram.

The whole pattern is worked in stocking stitch.
MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE
The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, from the finger-tips to the cuff. Stitches are increased on each side. At the grey squares in the diagram, stitches are placed on a stitch holder for the thumb-opening, then stitches are cast on for the thumb-gusset and the pattern is continued while decreasing on each side for the thumb-gusset. The cuff is worked in rib.
Stitches are knitted up around the thumb-opening and the thumb is worked in the round to finish.
LEFT MITTEN
Cast on 12 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 mm and colour Dark Ivy DROPS Lima/colour Moss Green DROPS Karisma (divide the stitches onto 4 needles and work with the 5th needle).
Work PATTERN – read explanation above, working A.1 in the round and increasing as shown in the diagram – read INCREASE TIP which explains how to work the yarn overs twisted either to left or right on the next round = 48-52 stitches. Remember to maintain the knitting tension!
When you have worked up to and including the round with an arrow in A.1, the piece measures approx. 12-12½ cm from the cast-on edge. On the next round work the thumb-opening: Work to the grey squares in the diagram, place the next 3 stitches on a thread/stitch holder and cast on 13-15 stitches for the thumb-gusset (using the colour-pattern on row 1 in A.2) = 58-64 stitches. Continue A.1 and work A.2 across the thumb-gusset stitches, decreasing as shown in A.2.
When the decreases in A.2 are finished, there are 48-52 stitches. When A.1 and A.2 are finished, the piece measures approx. 18-19½ cm from the cast-on edge, with approx. 6-6½ cm left to finished length. Finish the mitten using colour Dark Ivy/Moss Green.
Knit 2 rounds.
Switch to double pointed needles size 2,5 mm and work rib (= knit 2 / purl 2) AT THE SAME TIME increase 4 stitches evenly in purled sections on the first round = 52-56 stitches.
Work rib for 5-5½ cm. Cast off slightly loosely with rib. The mitten measures approx. 24-26 cm from the cast-on edge.
Tack the cast-on strand up and down through the cast-on stitches at the top of the mitten, tighten so the hole closes and fasten the strand well.
THUMB
Knit up 1 stitch in each of the 13-15 cast-on stitches on the thumb-gusset – NOTE: Knit up with both colours according to the first round in A.3. In addition knit up 9 stitches around the thumb-opening (the 3 stitches from the stitch holder are the middle 3 of these stitches: Round 1 in A.3 is finished – be aware that in size L/XL the stitches on the inside of the thumb will not match the stitches from the holder. Work these stitches as shown in A.3) = 22-24 stitches.
Divide the stitches onto double pointed needles size 3 mm and work pattern in the round according to A.3, decreasing for the top of the thumb as shown in the diagram. When A.3 is finished, there are 4-4 stitches left. Cut the strand, thread it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
The thumb measures approx. 6-7 cm.
RIGHT MITTEN
Work in the same way as the left mitten, i.e., work A.1 as far as the arrow then work the thumb-opening on the opposite side – see diagram A.4. The thumb-gusset and thumb are worked in the same way as on the left mitten.
