- or needle size needed to make 16 sts x 20 rows in stocking stitch with 2 threads Alpaca on 10 x 10 cm before felting = 20 sts x 27 rows on 10 x 10 cm after felting.

Pattern instructions
Keep the screen on while knitting
Tools
Knitting tension: 16 sts x 20 rows in stocking stitch with 2 threads Alpaca = 10 x 10 cm before felting.
Increase tip: Inc 1 st by knitting 2 sts in the same st.
Mitten: Knit back and forth in stocking stitch. Cast on 52-52-56 sts on needle 5.5 mm with 2 threads of medium grey. Continue until piece measures 10 cm. Change to 2 threads of light grey at the same time dec 8 sts evenly distributed = 44-44-48 sts.
When piece measures 14 cm continue with 1 thread of each colour. When piece measures 17-18-19 cm put 1 marking thread in the 22nd-22nd-24th st on needle (= marking for thumb). Then inc 1 st on each side of st with marking thread on every other row a total of 6-7-8 times - read inc.tip = 56-58-64 sts. After last inc put the inc sts + st with marking thread + 1 st on each side of these sts on a thread for thumb = 15-17-19 thumb sts. Cast on 3 new sts over the thumb sts = 44-44-48 sts.
Work measures now approx 23-25-27 cm. Continue in stocking stitch back and forth over these sts. When piece measures 26-27-27 cm change to 2 threads light grey. When piece measures 37½-40½-44½ cm knit all sts tog 2 by 2 = 22-22-24 sts remaining on needle. Pull a double thread through the remaining sts, pull tog and sew away ends. Finished measure = 38-41-45 cm.
Thumb: Slip the 15-17-19 thumb sts on double pointed needles size 5,5 mm and pick up 5 sts in the 3 inc sts on hand = 20-22-24 sts. Knit in the round on double pointed needles. When thumb measures approx 6-6-6½ cm from gusset knit the first 4-4-6 sts and the last 4-4-6 sts on round tog 2 by 2 = 16-18-18 sts. Work 2 rows. On next row knit the first 4 sts and the last 4 sts on round tog 2 by 2 = 12-14-14 sts. When piece measures 8½-8½-9 cm knit all sts tog 2 by 2 = 6-7-7 sts.
Thumb measures 9-9-9½ cm from gusset. Pull a double thread through the remaining sts, pull tog and sew away ends.
Assembly: Sew side seam in the outermost loops so that the seam doesn’t get thick.
FELTING
To avoid the thumb being felted to the mitten, turn it inside out and fasten a small plastic bag/silk ribbon over the top of the thumb with a safety pin. The opening of the safety pin should point towards the tip of the thumb so it is easy to remove after felting. Turn the mitten back to the right side, with the bag/ribbon inside the thumb.
The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below.
Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment.
IN WASHING MACHINE
Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING
Lay the piece in the washing machine and use a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme).
Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet.
IN TUMBLE DRYER
Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING
Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly.
