PATTERN
See diagrams A.1 to A.5. Choose diagram for your size (applies to A.2 to A.5).
Diagram A.5 shows position of thumb on right mitten.
MITTENS – SHORT OVERVIEW OF PIECE
The piece is worked in the round with double pointed needles, from cuff upwards, increasing for the thumb. When the increases for the thumb are finished, these stitches are placed on a thread and the hand finished. The thumb is worked in the round to finish.
LEFT MITTEN
Cast on 52-56 stitches with double pointed needles size 3 mm and colour red DROPS Lima. Work rib in the round (knit 2, purl 2) according to the stripes in diagram A.1.
When A.1 is finished in height, continue with stocking stitch according to diagram A.2 – AT THE SAME TIME, on round 1 in A.2, decrease 4-4 stitches evenly spaced = 48-52 stitches.
Remember to maintain the knitting tension.
When you have worked as far as the grey squares in the diagram, work A.3 across these 3 stitches. Continue diagrams A.2 and A.3 (increasing in A.3). After the last round in A.3, there are 13-15 stitches in A.3. Place these thumb-stitches on a thread, continue A.2 as far as the thumb-stitches and cast on 3 stitches behind the thumb-stitches (casting on in the pattern shown above the grey squares in A.2), finish the round as shown in A.2 = 48-52 stitches on the round.
Continue A.2 in the round.
When A.2 is finished in height, there are 8 stitches left. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well.
THUMB
Place the 13-15 stitches from the thread on double pointed needles size 3 mm. Begin the round by working the stitches in front of the thumb, then knitting up 9 stitches behind the thumb according to the pattern in round 1 of A.4 = 22-24 stitches. Work A.4 in the round. When the diagram is finished, there are 4-6 stitches left. Cut the strand, pull it through the remaining stitches, tighten and fasten well. The thumb measures approx. 6½-7 cm.
RIGHT MITTEN
Work in the same way as the left but with the thumb on the opposite side – see diagram A.5.
