Tools
STRIPES
The mitten is worked in stripes that are repeated as follows:
5 rounds in colour Off White
1 round in colour Wheat
TIPS FOR STRIPES - transition without notches:
To get a nicer transition at the beginning and end of round when working stripes, work as follows:
Switch to new colour and work 1 round. Work first stitch on next round as follows: Lift the stitch under first stitch on left needle (lift the stitch in back loop) and slip this stitch on left needle. Then knit this stitch together with next stitch on left needle. This way the transition will be less visible.
INCREASE TIP (applies to thumb gusset):
Increase by making 1 yarn over, on next round knit yarn over twisted.
DECREASE TIP
Begin 3 stitches before stitch with marker, knit 2 together, knit 3 (marker is in the middle of these stitches), slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over stitch worked (= 2 stitches decreased).
MITTENS - SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE
Worked in the round on double pointed needles, from wrist to fingertip.
If 0 stitches are given for the chosen size, it means that you skip the information until next information.
LEFT MITTEN
Cast on 54-54-60 stitches on double pointed needles size 4.5 mm with colour Wheat in DROPS Lima. Insert 1 marker thread to mark beginning of round.
Work rib in the round (= knit 3 twisted/purl 3) until piece measures 2 cm. Then decrease while AT THE SAME TIME working rib as follows: * Knit 1, knit 2 twisted together, purl 3 , work from -* the entire round = 45-45-50 stitches. Switch to colour Off White and work rib (= knit 2 twisted/purl 3) until piece measures 7-8-8 cm.
Insert 1 marker in the last stitch on round and knit 1 round while AT THE SAME TIME increasing 1-3-0 stitches on round = 46-48-50 stitches. Read STRIPES and STRIPE TIP in explanation above and continue in stocking stitch with stripes while AT THE SAME TIME increasing for thumb gusset by increasing 1 stitch on each side of stitch with marker - read INCREASE TIP. Increase like this on the outside of the increased stitches every 3rd round 6-7-8 times in total vertically høyden (= 13-15-17 thumb-stitches) = 58-62-66 stitches. Remember the knitting tension!
Work until piece measures 16-18-19 cm, increases for thumb gusset should be done. Then slip the 13-15-17 thumb stitches + 1 stitch on each side of these stitches on a thread for thumb = 15-17-19 thumb stitches. Work in the round as before and cast AT THE SAME TIME on 3 new stitches behind the thumb stitches on the thread = 46-48-50 stitches.
Work until piece measures approx. 11-11-12 cm from where new stitches were cast on. Piece measures approx. 27-29-31 cm from cast-on edge.
Now begin decrease at the top of mitten - continue piece until finished measurements in colour Off White. Insert 1 marker in each side on mitten as follows: Insert 1 marker in 1st stitch on round and 1 marker in 23rd-24th-25th stitch on round. Work in stocking stitch in the round over all stitches. AT THE SAME TIME on first round decrease 1 stitch on each side of both markers – read DECREASE TIP (= 4 stitches decreased). Decrease like this every other round 4-3-3 times in total, and then on every round 5-7-7 times in total = 10-8-10 stitches.
Cut the yarn and pull yarn through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten. Mitten measures approx. 32-34-36 cm from top and down.
THUMB
Work thumb stocking stitch in the round. Continue stripes as before from where stitches were put on a thread. Slip the 15-17-19 thumb stitches on double pointed needles size 4.5 mm – pick in addition up 3 stitches in stitches cast on behind thumb = 18-20-22 stitches. Work stocking stitch in the round until thumb measures approx. 6-6½-7 cm. Now decrease 3 stitches evenly = 15-17-19 stitches. Continue with colour Off White.
Work 2 rounds without decrease. On next round decrease 5-7-7 stitches evenly = 10-10-12 stitches. Work until thumb measures 7½-8-8½ cm. On next round knit all stitches together 2 by 2 = 5-5-6 stitches remain. Cut the yarn and pull yarn through the remaining stitches, tighten together and fasten.
RIGHT MITTEN
Cast on 54-54-60 stitches on double pointed needles size 4.5 mm with colour Wheat in DROPS Lima. Insert 1 marker thread to mark beginning of round. Work rib and stripes as on left mitten until piece measures 7-8-8 cm.
Insert 1 marker in the first stitch on round and knit 1 round while AT THE SAME TIME increasing 1-3-0 stitches on round = 46-48-50 stitches. Then work as on left mitten.
FELTING
To avoid the thumb being felted to the mitten, turn it inside out and fasten a small plastic bag/silk ribbon over the top of the thumb with a safety pin. The opening of the safety pin should point towards the tip of the thumb so it is easy to remove after felting. Turn the mitten back to the right side, with the bag/ribbon inside the thumb.
The piece can be felted either in the washing machine or the tumble dryer – read description below.
Remember: Subsequent washes are as for a normal wool garment.
IN WASHING MACHINE
Washing machines will vary when felting. If the piece is not felted enough, it can be felted again. If it is felted too much, it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING
Lay the piece in the washing machine and use a programme of approx. 40 minutes (not a wool programme).
Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash, detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while it is still wet.
IN TUMBLE DRYER
Felting in a tumble dryer gives good control over the degree of felting. The tumble dryer can be opened during drying to check the size of the piece. If it is not felted enough it can be thoroughly wetted and felted again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct size while still wet.
DO THE FOLLOWING
Lay the piece in water so it becomes completely wet, then place it in the tumble dryer and begin the drying process. Dry to the desired size, checking regularly.
