Finished Size
Teen to Adult Woman, 21″ circumference, 10″ height
Materials
- “Be So Baby” by Kristin Omdahl Yarns, 100% milk fiber, DK weight, 142 yards per 50g ball, shown in one ball each of Splash (color A), Platinum (color B) and Navy (color C)
- Suggested hooks: E-4/3.5mm (smaller hook) and G-6/4mm (larger hook)
- Needle (for weaving ends)
- Pre-made pompom (optional)
Notes
The body of this hat is made in 3-color technique. The color is changed at the end of each row. Cutting off isn’t necessary. Simply drop the unused color and pick up the new color to begin the next row.
The entire hat is worked flat and then seamed.
When working in back loop only single crochet, the last stitch of a row can get a little loopy. If you find this happens, try working the last stitch under both loops for stability.
Gauge
In stitch pattern (counting chain spaces as a stitch), 24 sts for 22 rows measures 4″
Crochet Pattern Instructions
Ribbing
Row 1: With smaller hook and color A, ch 10, sc in second ch from hook and in each remaining ch, turn: 9 sc.
Rows 2-93: Working in back loops only, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn: 9 sc. Fasten off.
Hat Body
Switch to larger hook.
Row 1: Join color B in side of last row worked with sl st to begin working along the sides of rows, ch 2, sk same row of joining, sc in side of next row, ch 1, sc in side of next row, *sk next row, [ch 1, sc in side of next row] twice, ch 1, rep from * to last 3 rows, sk next row, [ch 1, sc in side of next row] twice, changing to color C on final sc, turn: 62 sc.
Row 2: Now with color C, ch 2, sc in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp, rep from * across, ch 1, sc in sp of ch-2 turning ch, changing to color A on final sc, turn: 62 sc.
Rep row 2, changing colors as established until piece measures 10″ from beginning.
Last row: Ch 1, sc in each ch-1 sp across, sc in sp of ch-2 turning ch, fasten off, leaving 15″ strand.
Finishing
With yarn needle, weave yarn in tops of each sc of last row, cinch together carefully and fasten. With yarn needle, seam the sides of the rows together to form the hat. Attach pompom (optional). Weave in ends securely.
