Finished Size
Teen to Adult Woman, 21″ circumference, 8.5″ height
Materials
- “Vintage Look DK” by Stylecraft Yarns, 75% acrylic/25% wool, DK weight, Yarn Standards Size 3, 326 yards per 100g ball, shown in one skein of color Prairie
- Suggested hooks: E-4/3.5mm (smaller hook) and G-6/4mm (larger hook)
- Needle (for weaving ends)
- Pre-made pompom (optional)
Notes
It’s important to count your stitches for this project. It’s easy to miss some. Stitch counts are always shown in the instructions, after the colon. When there is no number, there is no change from the prior row.
Special Stitches
Double Crochet Two Together (dc2tog): Yarn over, insert hook in stitch indicated, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over, pull loop through, yarn over, pull through 3 loops on hook. (Note: This dc2tog may be slightly different to one you are accustomed to making.)
Gauge
In stitch pattern (with larger hook), 22 sts for 18 rows measures 4″
Crochet Pattern Instructions
Ribbing
Row 1: With smaller hook, ch 10, sc in second ch from hook and in each remaining ch, turn: 9 sc.
Rows 2-113: Working in back loops only, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn: 9 sc. Fasten off.
Hat Body
Switch to larger hook.
Round 1: Turn ribbing strip to begin working along the sides of rows, ch 2 (counts as dc here and throughout), sk same row, dc in side of each remaining row across, sl st to first dc: 113 dc.
Round 2: Ch 1, working in front loops only, rev sc around, sl st in top of first dc of prior row: 113 sc.
Round 3: Ch 2, sk same dc, working in unworked back loops only of same dc used in prior row, dc in each remaining dc around, sl st to first dc.
Rounds 4-17: Rep rounds 2-3.
Round 18: Rep round 2.
Round 19: Ch 2, sk same dc, working in back loops only of same dc used in prior row, *dc in each of next 5 dc, dc2tog (see Special Stitches above), rep from * across, sl st to first dc: 99 dc.
Round 20: Rep round 2.
Round 21: Ch 2, sk same dc, working in back loops only of same dc used in prior row, *dc in each of next 4 dc, dc2tog, rep from * across, sl st to first dc: 85 dc.
Round 22: Rep round 2.
Round 23: Ch 2, sk same dc, working in back loops only of same dc used in prior row, *dc in each of next 3 dc, dc2tog, rep from * around, sl st to first dc: 71 dc.
Round 24: Rep round 2.
Round 25: Ch 2, sk same dc, working in back loops only of same dc used in prior row, *dc in each of next 2 dc, dc2tog, rep from * around, sl st to first dc: 57 dc.
Round 26: Rep round 2.
Round 27: Ch 2, sk same dc, working in back loops only of same dc used in prior row, *dc in next dc, dc2tog, rep from * around, sl st to first dc: 43 dc.
Round 28: Rep round 2.
Round 29: Ch 2, sk same dc, working in back loops only of same dc used in prior row, dc2tog around, sl st to first dc: 29 dc.
Round 30: Rep round 2.
Round 31: Ch 2, sk same dc, working in back loops only of same dc used in prior row, dc2tog around, sl st to first dc: 15 dc.
Rounds 32-33: Rep previous 2 rounds, fasten off: 8 dc.
Finishing
With yarn needle, weave yarn in tops of each dc of last row, cinch together carefully and fasten. With yarn needle, seam the first and last rows of ribbing. Attach pompom (optional). Weave in ends securely.
