GARTER STITCH
Knit all rows, from both the right and wrong side.
1 ridge in height = knit 2 rows.
PATTERN
See diagram A.1.
The diagram is worked from right to left when working from the right side and left to right when working from the wrong side.
FELTED SITTING MAT – SHORT OVERVIEW OF THE PIECE
The piece is worked back and forth, then felted to finish.
SITTING MAT
Cast on 31 stitches with circular needle size 12 mm and DROPS Polaris. Knit 2 rows (with the first row from the right side). On the next row (right side) work as follows: 1 GARTER STITCH – read explanation above, A.1 across the next 28 stitches, work the first stitch in A.1, finish with 1 GARTER STITCH. Remember to maintain the knitting tension. Continue this pattern until the piece measures 42 cm, finishing after row 4 or 8 in the diagram. Knit 2 rows. Cast off with knit from the right side. The piece measures approx. 44 cm.
FELTING
The piece can either be felted in the washing machine or in the tumble dryer, as explained below.
Remember: Later washes are as a normal wool garment.
IN WASHING MACHINE
Felting will vary in different washing machines. If the piece is not felted enough, you can felt it again. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct side while still wet.
FELT AS FOLLOWS
Put the mat in the washing machine, using a 40 min. wash (not a wool programme).
Wash at 40 degrees without pre-wash - detergent is optional. After washing, shape the piece while still wet.
IN TUMBLE DRYER
Felting in the tumble dryer gives you good control of the felting process. The tumble dryer can be opened and the size of the piece checked. If the piece is not felted enough, you can wet it again and repeat the process. If it is felted too much it can be stretched to the correct side while still wet as follows:
Lay the piece in water until it is thoroughly wet, then lay it in the tumble dryer and begin drying., Felt to the desired size, checking now and again.
